Salkantay Trek

This trek crosses the Salkantay Pass at 4 650m/15 200ft. It descends into the cloud forest and passes the Inca ruins of Llactapata, with an incredible view of Machu Picchu.

Therefore the Salkantay Trek is named among the 25 best Treks in the World, by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine.

Along this journey you will experience some outstanding views, explore archaeological sites, spot some Wildlife and furthermore indulge in the Peruvian cuisine.

We will pick you up early in the morning from your hotel/hostel with private transportation. The drive will be about 3 hours to Soraypampa, where our chef will prepare a nutritious breakfast for us. We will also have some time to organise our daypacks and put on sunscreen.

Around 9am we will start the ascension along the Salkantay valley with an amazing view of the Salkantay glacier right in front of us. There will be lots of photo opportunities along the way with the mountains surrounding us.

After approximately 3 hours of hiking we will arrive at the lunch spot, Soyroccocha (4400m/14432ft). After a delicious lunch and a short rest we just have 1 more hour until we will reach the Salkantay Pass (4650m/15255ft).

It is a great feeling of accomplishment when you finally reach the highest point of the Salkantay Pass. Furthermore it is one of the best places to appreciate the Andes Mountains. We will spend some time here to take in the views. Time to take a selfie, before we start a 2 hour descend towards our campsite Huayracmachay (3840m/12595ft). Along this rocky area you might even be able to spot some chinchillas (Andean rabbit).

After breakfast we start to hike downhill into the cloud forest. You will be able to notice a change in landscape as well as temperature in a short amount of time. Here you will see lots of tropical trees, flowers, birds, bamboo and more. After around 3 hours we will arrive to Collpapampa (3000m/9842ft) where we will stop for an early lunch.

The next part of our journey will be a 5 hours stretch among bamboo, native trees, orchids, coffee bushes, avocado and banana trees as well as farming fields, and local people offering us their products. This area is quiet hot so you may want to hike in shorts, but don’t forget to apply bug spray as there will be lots of mosquitoes. Once we reach our Campsite we will enjoy happy hour, dinner and perhaps a game of cards.

Today we will be hiking along an Inca trail and will see Machu Picchu in the distance!

The day begins early as usual, we will spend the morning visiting some coffee plantations to learn from the locals the process of making and preparing coffee. Before starting the hike we will delight in a homemade cup of coffee, it doesn’t get any fresher than this! We will be hiking along a road for approximately 1 hour before we arrive at our lunch stop in Lucmabamba.

After enjoying lunch and perhaps having another cup of coffee we will continue our journey on an orginal Inca trail that used to connect Machu Picchu and Vilcabamba, known as the last capital of the Incas. The Inca trail network is huge around 45000km, so this is just a small portion of it.

We will continue to hike up the mountains for another 3-4 hours until we will reach the small Inca site of Llactapata. From here you will be able to see Machu Picchu city in the distance right in between the old Machu Picchu Mountain and the young Huayna Picchu Mountain, for sure one of the best views of our entire journey. We will also be able to spot the Salkantay Mountain on the opposite side.

Another 15 mins to hike until we arrive at the campsite. This campsite has definitely the best view, as you get to see Machu Picchu in the distance.

Today you will be waking up with a view of Machu Picchu in front of you. What an amazing way to start the day. Our Chef will prepare a nutrition’s breakfast for you before we start walking down the hill to the valley of Aobamba which should take us 1.5 hours.

From there we hike underneath the Machu Picchu Mountain, pass the hydroelectric plant, and reach the train station where lunch is waiting for us.
After lunch our journey continues along the train tracks. This is a beautiful section of the Trail as we will be surrounded by huge trees and beautiful flowers.
Once we arrive in the town of Aguas Calientes we will check-in at our hotel followed by dinner.

Early in the morning we will catch the bus to Machu Picchu where your guide takes you on a tour around the city for 2 hours. Afterwards you have free time to explore the city on your own.
You will also be climbing either the mountain of Huayna Picchu or the Mountain of Machu Picchu (if you have booked these options in advance). At around 1pm (recommended time) you are leaving to take the bus back to Aguas Calientes where you will be catching the train to Ollantaytambo. Our private transportation will be waiting for you to take you back to Cusco and drop you off at your Hotel/Hostel.
