Maras and Moray
Join us on this wonderful half day journey. Our first stop will be the site of Maras. The town is well known for its salt evaporation ponds, still in use today and since Inca times.
Our second stop we explore the archaeological site of Moray. This site contains unusual Inca ruins, consisting of several terraced circular depressions.
Along the way you also get to enjoy part of the amazing views of the sacred valley which used to function as an agricultural, spiritual and political center for the Incas.
We will pick you up from your hotel/hostel at 8am. The drive to Moray will take approximately 1hr 30mins. Along the way enjoy the beautiful views of the snowcapped Chicon mountain (5530m/18138ft) and the Veronica mountain (5682m/18636 ft)
Once in Moray we visit the most important agricultural area in Cusco “the Inca agricultural greenhouse or laboratory”. It consist of four platforms amphitheater style and it has a depth of 150 meters. The overlapping concentric circular stone rings widen as they rise, it was a laboratory where Incas also performed rituals and festivities.
After exploring Moray we will continue towards the salt mines of Maras (3028m/9931) located 7 km from Moray. The Salt mines are made up of about 3000 small wells with an area average size of about 5m². The mines were already exploited since Inca times as a means of economic exchange and securities.
We arrive back to Cusco at approximately 2pm just in time to enjoy some lunch on your own.
